I am hoping this wasn't the last camping trip of the season, but as days grow shorter and colder, it won't be long before the snow is flying in most of my favorite high-country, Colorado campgrounds. However, I was able to squeeze in at least one more with a return visit to Mueller State Park to enjoy the turning of the aspen and the beauty that the change of seasons brings.
It was a great weekend to catch the Aspen changing at their peak.
Mueller State Park has over 55 miles of trails for exploring this 5,000 acre playground. Many of the trails allow cycling, which is my favorite way to get around.
While riding the trails, I came across this small flock of wild turkeys.

I took a side trip to Colorado Springs and explored Garden of the Gods. A 1300 acre park of red, sandstone rock spires and spectacular geological formations. It is a great place for hiking, picnicking, and photography.

ReplyDeleteI have a query that is not Airstream related. We are flying in to Colorado Springs in late December. We are going to our family compound in Dillon. We can drive up to Denver and drive down I-70 like we usually do when we fly into Denver. However, I would like to take the scenic route through Fairplay and approach Dillon from Breckenridge. Are the routes to Fairplay from Colorado Springs passable this time of year?

DeleteYes, I'd expect that route is generally passable depending on recent weather. Here is a link to the Colorado Dept. of Transportation. It shows real time updates of road conditions and closures, and it should help with choosing travel routes.

Thanks Tim. We need a lot of snow in Summit and Eagle County between now and the end of the month. They only have an 18 inch base so far. That is pathetic. I appreciate the feedback. Sadly, I have winterized the Airstream but I may take it to West Virginia for some skiing in February. If it doesn't start snowing in Colorado, the skiing may be better in West Virginia.
DeleteYes - it has been a very warm, dry winter (and Summer and Fall). We could really use the snow/rain. With a little luck, you will see some decent ski conditions when you are here. I continue to keep my fingers crossed for some sizable precip.
